Lateral North launch Reconnect Glasgow

Background
At the moment Transport Scotland are consulting on the future of the M8 Woodside Viaducts and have only given local people 5 weeks (with only two in-person consultations) to make a decision on whether they should Repair, Replace or Remove the viaducts.

Today, Lateral North is launching Reconnect Glasgow to ask Transport Scotland to rethink its approach and meaningfully engage with local people, communities, businesses and organisations.

Through conversations with local people, businesses and organisations it has become apparent that there is a lack of options, information and time to fully comprehend or discuss what is effectively a +£150m project that will affect the lives of locals (and the rest of Glasgow and beyond) for the next 3-5 years. The consultation closes on 25th March 2026, leaving only two weeks to respond.

Lateral North is keen to offer a collective creative response from Glaswegians and they need your help!

Our Collective Creative Response
Reconnect Glasgow asks local people, young people, communities and Glaswegians to develop a collective creative voice in response to this opportunity.

Lateral North requests that Transport Scotland return to the drawing board and provide a more meaningful and collaborative engagement programme.

Lateral North is asking people throughout Glasgow to respond to ‘design briefs’ that reimagine what the land at the M8 Woodside Viaducts could be. Please visit www.lateralnorth.com/reconnect for more information and see the following documents for how to submit ideas.

The event will explore new developments in the venue and surrounding area, with a tour of the Collective Communities co-working and events spaces in East Campbell Street, contributions from tenants and creative collaborators. The meet up will end with a visit to Strange Exchange, a library and community learning space nestled in The Barras, just 5mins walk away.

Our Spotlight Contributors

They share resources and programme events that facilitate exchange around arts education, play and collaboration. They collect and celebrate work that often remains unseen beyond its immediate context, this includes outcomes and experiments from artist-led programming, artist books, toolkits, publications, ephemera and artworks.

Stuck? Collective CIC is a new organisation that partners with hospitality venues to showcase artists work throughout the city. Currently partnered with Fern andThe Glad Cafe, they are looking to create a sustainable arts economy outside of traditional gallery spaces.

This event is free and open to all – so bring your ideas, your enthusiasm, and your creative spirit – we can’t wait to see you there!

PITCH POT: Pre-Event pitch development workshop

Online Workshop, Tue 24th March, 6-7.30pm, £FREE

We’ve launched a new event series – PITCH POT. Thanks to a generous grant from Glasgow City Council, and building on our successful SOUP microgranting events in 2025, we’re inviting up to eight of our members to pitch their creative projects at an event in May – with a chance to receive a share of the PITCH POT – expected value £1000 and £500 (depending on ticket sales).

This event series will support awareness raising, promotion, mentoring and signposting, and provide two pitches with microgrants to help realise their ambitions.

This special edition focuses on supporting Glasgow’s creative and cultural practitioners to meet the needs of the city’s growing visitor economy, including:

  • Tourism: Creating authentic cultural experiences for visitors to the city.

  • Promotion: Showcasing Glasgow as a vibrant cultural destination to new audiences and markets.

  • Community Wealth Building: Ensuring local creative practitioners and businesses based in the city profit directly from tourism spending.

Come along to this FREE online workshop to learn more about the event and develop your pitching skills.

CULTURE MATTERS: Does Scotland Need A Culture Act?

Thu 19th March, 5:45-7:30pm, Advanced Research Centre, University of Glasgow

Our first event in a new collaborative series with University of Glasgow’s Cultural Industries subject area takes place 19th March… after selling out in record time we’ve managed to release a handful of tickets. Get in quick before it sells out again!

BOOK NOW

In this first event we delve into the current advocacy for a Culture Act for Scotland, put forward jointly by Culture Counts and Community Leisure UK in the lead up to the 2026 Scottish Parliamentary Elections. This campaign argues:

“Given the central role which culture plays in our economy, our international profile, our education system and so many other areas of society, it’s time for MSPs to pass legislation which ensures this is the case long into the future.”

We’ll be exploring

  • What has precipitated this campaign?

  • What are the imagined benefits of a Culture Act for Scotland?

  • Where are those advocating for a Culture Act looking to in the world for inspiration?

  • What legislative mechanisms might a Culture Act contain?

  • What responses have there been to this proposal from Scotland’s political parties, policy makers, cultural institutions, and cultural workers?

_____

The Event Contributors

Culture Matters is hosted by Professor Mark Banks, Head of the new Cultural Industries Subject Area, and this first discussion will be chaired by Dr. Nikki Kane, Lecturer in Creative Industries and Culture Policy, and Convenor of a new MSc course in Cultural Institutions.

We’ll be joined by panellists Joseph Peach, Director of Policy and Public Affairs at Culture Counts, Veronique AA Lapeyre, Director of the Scottish Contemporary Art Network (SCAN), and Cllr Holly Bruce, Scottish Greens Councillor for the Langside Ward and Green candidate for the Glasgow Southside Holyrood constituency.

Look out for updates about our next events in this series COMING SOON

Creative Call-Out: Take Part in the ITAC Relay 2026

Artists, makers, producers, performers, designers and creative practitioners across Scotland are invited to take part in the ITAC Relay 2026, hosted by Healing Arts Scotland. The only criteria for participation is to be an arts and health group who would like to participate and can do so in either March, April, or May of this year.

What is the ITAC Relay?

The ITAC Relay brings together creative communities to celebrate the vital role of the arts in health, wellbeing and connection.

How to participate

Groups can sign up directly to take part in ITAC Relay 2026 – madeleine@itac-collaborative.com

What is the Healing Arts Scotland ITAC Relay? – An Overview
Building on the amazing work of 2024, the HAS ITAC Relay will be a chance to highlight and celebrate the amazing arts and health work already happening in communities across Scotland, as led by participatory artists, and join up the various pockets of work which are ongoing. The event will invite groups from around the country to contribute their voice to a collective tapestry of artistic responses which speak to key arts and health themes. Healing Arts will pass stimuli from one group to another, asking each to add to the work of the last, until our final creations are displayed in key partner’s spaces across Healing Arts Scotland Week 2026. This builds on the amazing work from Healing Arts Scotland 2024 where groups connected and collaborated on a national scale for the first time. It is a chance for the voices of participatory artists and participants to be central to the proceedings – connecting their work in a literal and artistic sense.

As a reminder, in 2024 the ITAC Relay welcomed:
  • 450+ participants
  • 20 Newly Made Creations
  • Across 15 Cities
  • Led by 25 Participatory Artists

What ITAC Relay Participants Valued Most:
– Feeling part of something bigger.
– A creative and therapeutic way to explore topics like loneliness and community wellbeing.
– New methods for creating and sharing art.
– Deeper connections with their own groups and the wider community.
– Inspiration to continue using the Relay model in their own work.

ITAC Relay Participant voices
“Our group absolutely loved taking part — it was innovative, fun, and meaningful.”
“The Relay showed the power of art to connect people who may never meet.”
“Being part of something bigger gave us energy, purpose, and fresh ideas.”
