Fair Work Statement

Updated January 2025

As a membership organisation operating as a network providing advocacy and opportunities, we are fully committed to the principles of Fair Work. We believe in promoting a fair and inclusive working environment, both internally and in our engagement with other creatives, partners, and freelancers. Our commitments include:

Fair Opportunity: Actively seeking diverse talent and ensuring transparent and unbiased recruitment processes, supported by a monthly opportunities newsletter aligning with our fair work principles.

Security of Income: Prioritising security of income for our staff and collaborators, being a real living wage accredited employer, and offering fair compensation based on skills, experience, and industry standards, ensuring timely and equitable payment practices.

Fulfilment: Creating an environment where individuals feel fulfilled and empowered in their work, promoting work-life balance, providing support and resources, and offering professional development opportunities. We foster open communication, encourage feedback, and recognise achievements.

Respect at Work: Cultivating a culture of respect and dignity in all interactions, fostering inclusivity, support, and mutual respect, while strictly prohibiting discrimination, harassment, and bullying. We have clear policies and procedures in place to address concerns or grievances, ensuring everyone is treated with fairness and respect.

Effective Voice: Empowering individuals to have an effective voice within our network, encouraging open dialogue, active listening, and participation from all staff, partners, and freelancers. We provide opportunities for input, consultation, and collaboration to ensure diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.

Our Related Organisational Policies

We have comprehensive policy documents relating to our commitments to Fair Work. These organisational policies are regularly reviewed every three years to uphold best practices, consulting with professional bodies such as NSPCC for updates. They’re stored securely online for staff reference and shared with new hires to ensure understanding. Freelancers receive relevant policies via email along with contracts for safe working. By implementing these policies and communicating them effectively, we ensure our commitments to the Fair Work principles are understood, fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect. This reinforces our organisation’s values and reputation within the creative community.

Rates and Conditions of Pay

Salaries will be calculated while considering the living wage and adhering to the minimum requirements set by the Scottish Artist Union (SAU)and Independent Theatre Council (ITC) for the industry. These calculations will be done on a pro-rata part-time basis. The salaries of contracted staff will be regularly reviewed to align with inflation rates, taking reference from all funders, and subjected to thorough examination by the board and directors. Moreover, the contracted staff salaries will encompass both pension contributions and tax deductions to ensure fair compensation and financial compliance.

Freelance contractors will receive remuneration that adheres to the minimum requirements set by the Scottish Artist Union (SAU) and/or Independent Theatre Council (ITC) for their industry. These calculations will be done on a pro-rata part-time basis. All freelance contractors will receive a letter of agreement that clearly states the agreed payment terms, process for receiving funds and timescales for receiving them. Contact details to raise a complaint, concern or dispute relating to contractual terms or payment are also included in all letters of agreement.

Monitoring And Reporting Against Our Fair Work Commitments

We will employ various methods to monitor our adherence to our fair work commitments. These include:

  1. Reviewing our budgets and allocation of fees and their levels
  2. Surveying freelance contributors socio-demographic characteristics and experiences of working with us
  3. Monitoring feedback and actions arising from staff, freelancers and programme contributors

This valuable data plays a vital role in informing our online programming decisions, operational activities, and budget allocation processes. To that effect we will actively monitor and document how we use the data and the impact of any changes we make as a result of it.

We will publish a digest of our Fair Work-related actions, socio-demographic monitoring results, and progress annually. Our next report will be published in September 2025.
